Product placement in an 'exciting' new way

Although millions of dollars are spent every year on finding new marketing opportunities, an obvious place for product placement has only been discovered recently. The porn industry is making even more money now that clothing brands decided to try a new and naughty way of advertising. In a time when scientific research is sabotaged because too many men have watched porn, this seems like a logical evolution. When a girl is taking off her H&M clothes , the durex pack of condoms on the night table might not be the thing that turns you on, but marketers can be quite sure you paid attention to every detail on the screen.

Product placement : Big business

As traditional advertising methods are getting less and less effective, marketers are always keen on finding new ways to reach their potential consumers. Over the years, product placement has shown its effectiveness as an alternative. Big companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch now have in-house divisions solely created to read new film scripts to try to find a good spot where they can show their brand in a cool way.

But that’s not all. There is a company called Creative Film Promotions, which has designed a special computer program. Just by typing in some keywords, the program will try to find the best spots in a movie to put in some product placement. Knowing recent movies can have up to 20 minutes of product placement in it, you can imagine what amounts of money are involved in this new advertising business.

Product placement: a gift from the devil?

In the early twenties, tobacco companies realized that when people saw their favorite actors smoke in a movie, the sales of their products increased. Soon afterwards, also clothing brands successfully tried this form of advertising. Product placement was born.

When product placement first showed up, it was
mainly a coincidence. Hollywood was convinced that a mafia member had to smoke, because it wouldn’t be a real gangster if he didn’t.
Nowadays, different brands have acknowledged the effectiveness of product placement and are willing to spend thousands of dollars to get their brand in a popular movie.

At first this seemed like a win-win situation. Films had a bigger budget and brands were able to reach their potential consumers easily. Nevertheless, today the downside of it all becomes more and more clear. As companies are willing to pay larger amounts of money, film scripts are rewritten to make sure the brand can have a good spot on the screen, sometimes spoiling part of the story.

In the long run, Hollywood might lose more than it gained. When stories get altered to much, decent movies can become very rare, and big Hollywood films could lose their biggest fans. Bye Bye James Bond?
